John A. Gatling
President and Chief Operating Officer

John Gatling was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Hess Midstream in 2017. Gatling’s appointment coincided with the establishment and public listing of Hess Midstream on the New York Stock Exchange in the same period.

As the President and COO of Hess Midstream Gatling leads a fee-based, growth-oriented midstream company that owns significant oil, gas and produced water handling assets primarily located in the Bakken and Three Forks Shale plays in the Williston Basin area of North Dakota- one of the most prolific crude oil gathering basins in North America.

Prior to his appointment as President and COO for HESM, Gatling held a range of senior roles across Hess Corporation, including positions as Director of Business Planning and Operational Excellence, Director of Global Production Excellence and Planning, and Senior Manager of Global Production Planning.

Prior to joining Hess, Gatling spent 14 years with Aera Energy, a California-based joint-venture affiliate of Shell and Exxon Mobil, where, through various senior leadership roles was responsible for finance and strategic planning, commercial, operational excellence, and project development and execution.

Gatling holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from California State University and a Master’s degree from Duke University.
